The Tyler Walker Volunteer Program
Honoring Service. Inspiring Community.
Volunteers are the heart of Amazement Square. Our ability to create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for children and families depends on the dedication of individuals who give their time, energy, and care to Amazement Square.
In recognition of that spirit of service—and in honor of a beloved volunteer—the Amazement Square Volunteer Program is proudly known as the Tyler Walker Volunteer Program.
A Legacy of Giving
On August 8, 2023, Amazement Square tragically lost a cherished member of its volunteer family, Kathleen Tyler Walker, at the young age of 36.
Tyler graduated from Randolph College with a double major and concentration in Art History and Politics and played an important role during the formative years of Amazement Square (2000–2001), when the museum’s exhibitions were being prepared for installation. Tyler, her sister Alexandra (Axi) Lewis Walker, and their classmates at James River Day School were often invited to serve as early “testers,” helping the exhibit team evaluate functionality, accessibility, and cause-and-effect learning within each space.
Before heading off to college, Tyler and Axi were also regular volunteers at the museum and assisted with numerous events that raised funds for Amazement Square’s Sponsored Admission Program.
In appreciation for Tyler’s generous spirit and lasting impact, the volunteer program now carries her name—honoring not only her contributions, but the collective service of every volunteer who makes Amazement Square a welcoming place for all.
